Chapter 7

Kennedy was already at the Bistro when I arrived the following morning. Amy was the only other person in the building, and I wasn’t sure if Kennedy had already spoken to her or if she was waiting to speak to the two of us together. Her eyes were red and swollen, although I could see that she’d tried to cover up evidence of her tears with makeup. A quick glance around the restaurant confirmed that Addy wasn’t on-site, so Kennedy must have dropped her off at summer camp on her way in.

“Morning,” I said casually, figuring I’d let her set the pace.

“Good morning, Shelby. I’m glad you came in early. I wanted to speak to you and Amy before the others arrive.”

“Okay. Just let me drop my purse in my office, and we’ll all sit down and have a nice chat.”

“I’ll grab a pot of coffee,” Kennedy offered.

I basically sprinted up the stairs to my office. Amy had brought Hennessy back to the Bistro when she’d come in early this morning, so the cat, who must have thought I was playing a game, sprinted up the stairs after me. I dropped my purse on my desk and then ran down the stairs even more quickly than I’d sprinted up them. When I arrived in the dining room, Amy and Kennedy were already sitting at one of the round four tops.

“So, what’s up?” I asked Kennedy once I’d poured myself a cup of coffee.

She started off hesitantly but picked up steam as she went. “My oldest brother, Cleveland, called yesterday to inform me that he was in Bar Harbor and needed me to come by the house he’d rented to sign some papers. I guess I knew from the beginning that something was up. He’s in charge of managing our parent’s estate, and he’s also in charge of managing Addy’s trust fund, so it isn’t uncommon for him to ask me to stop by to sign one sort of document or another, but it isn’t like him to demand that I sign papers in the middle of a workday.” She paused, took a deep breath, and then continued. “Still, despite the bad feeling I had about the situation, I’d hoped I’d be able to take care of whatever he wanted me to attend to in a minimal amount of time and then be on my way.”

Amy and I silently waited for her to continue.

“When I arrived at the house he’d rented, I realized Cleveland wasn’t alone.” She paused, took a deep breath, and swiped at the tears forming in the corners of her eyes.

“Who was with him?” Amy eventually asked.

“Addy’s father,” she whispered.

I cringed. I didn’t know what had happened between Kennedy and Addy’s father, but it didn’t seem that he was present in their lives. In fact, based on the way Addy talked about him, or more precisely, didn’t talk about him, I wasn’t sure if she’d ever even met him.

“I take it the two of you haven’t stayed in touch,” I guessed.
